Le definizioni maggiormente usate del termine sviluppo sostenibile si trovano nel rapporto Brundtland (1987): "Il futuro di noi tutti" (Our Common Future) del 1987, della commissione mondiale per l'ambiente e lo sviluppo (World Commission on Environment e Development, nota anche come la commissione Brundtland) dove si definisce lo sviluppo sostenibile come sviluppo che soddisfa i bisogni del presente senza compromettere la capacità delle generazioni future di soddisfare i propri bisogni.
