Il 27 settembre 1968, gli allora Stati membri delle Comunità europee hanno concluso, ai sensi dell’articolo 220, quarto trattino, del trattato che istituisce la Comunità europea, la convenzione di Bruxelles concernente la competenza giurisdizionale e l’esecuzione delle decisioni in materia civile e commerciale, successivamente modificata dalle convenzioni di adesione di nuovi Stati membri a tale convenzione (la «Convenzione di Bruxelles del 1968») .
On 27 September 1968, the then Member States of the European Communities, acting under Article 220, fourth indent, of the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community, concluded the Brussels Convention on Jurisdiction and the Enforcement of Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters, subsequently amended by conventions on the accession to that Convention of new Member States (‘the 1968 Brussels Convention’).
